If you go to Kuta for stunning sunset, people will come to Sanur for the super

Sanur is considered a strategic place. This beach area is close to Denpasar
city, 20 minutes drive to Kuta area, and approximately 30 minutes drive to
Ngurah Rai International airport. In the meantime Gianyar which is famed for
its art works is only 30 minutes drive.

Based on Prasasti Blanjong (inscription written on the stones) aged 903, which
mention the word Sanur, Sanur is the name written when Sri Kesari Warmadewa
fought over Alas Petaling Magalak area which was under the rule of Ugrasena on
that time. Warmadewa succeeded. Later on this area was mostly inhabited by
Brahman. That time they saw that Alas Petaling Magalak shone from afar that
they named that area Sanur. No wonder, Sanur became the most popular site for
both holy priests and people with magical power.

That magical power is called “Leak”. People who have mastered this power can
change to be everything they want. This news spread out to the community that
others people considered Sanur was a creepy place made Sanur became desolate
area. But then the first five-star hotel construction in Sanur, Bali Beach
Hotel broke all the fear and Sanur attracts so many tourists to come since.
The story about Leak seems drowning by the modernity and the urban life in
Sanur.

In the meantime, Sanur was also an important harbor where the first war
occurred between Netherlands against Bali community. Netherlands’ ship sank
and on that time Balinese had a rule of Hak Tawan Karang means every sunken
ship in Bali territory then the ship together with all goods inside belongs to
Balinese people. The battle between Dutch and Balinese started from Hak Tawan
Karang and it continued to Puputan war.

So I stepped in to Museum Le Mayeur situated right on the Sanur Beach, almost
hidden by the array of local warung. This museum was a lovely home of Le
Mayeur and his model who later on became his wife, Ni Polok. Hundreds of
wonderful paintings mostly described about Balinese dancer are preserved very
well in the three different rooms.

At the gate you may doubt whether to come in or not, like I did. But you will
thank to yourself if you let yourself come in. First exhibition room was his
living room where he gathered with friends. One thing that amazed me is Le
Mayeur could create maximum quality of painting by using minimum tools. He
presented finest paintings on rice papers; those are extremely unique and
beautiful art works. In 1970s canvas didn’t exist yet in Bali but that fact
didn’t kill Le Mayeur’s creativity actually.

Besides his paintings he made in Bali, there are also several paintings he
made in other countries. He captured Italian afternoon tea in his painting
exhibited in first room. The similar paintings which are tokens that before
settling in Bali he also travelled to other countries are exhibited in the
second room. It was his personal bedroom.

The smallest exhibition room was his studio. To make you understand about Le
Mayeur’s life, each exhibition room is completed with a short explanation of
the room function.

Outside, above the lotus pond, there are statues of Le Mayeur and Ni Polok; a
sign that this wonderful place was their warm home where great paintings are
made. And all this unexpectedly brilliant experience cost you only IDR 5.000.
It is not fair, the management should consider about the change of ticket
price since first it is really amazing, and second the building needs to be
refurbished a little bit.

Until today, for people who crave to experience the magical atmosphere right
on the beach, Sanur is always the better choice compared to Kuta. In the early
morning when people staying in Kuta start to sleep after spending the night at
the clubs, people staying in Sanur will see breathtaking sunrise and fishermen
traditional boats. Although now Sanur has been modernized, you can feel the
magical atmosphere; the same thing which described by Le Mayeur and Leonard
Leoras, also experienced by Mick Jagger.

At his museum, Le Mayeur’s paintings are superb showing his great passion on
Balinese dancer and the exoticism of Sanur beach. In 1970s, when no one see
the beauty of Sanur, Le Mayeur, a Belgium painter decided to stay on Sanur
beach and painted Balinese dancer who posed under the sun. This Balinese
dancer later on became his wife. His fabulous paintings which were created in
Sanur can be seen in his simple museum on Sanur Beach.

Another expatriate who also capture the magical atmosphere and exoticism of
Sanur is Leonard Leoras, an ex-journalist/photographer from USA. This guy who
built his retire home in the small lane in Sanur captured the old Sanur by
launching a book entitled “Sanur”. All about Sanur starting from its culture
to magical things fill his head. The most popular thing from Sanur which
become an object of an observation is its mystics in which Balinese call it as
Pangaleakan.

Today’s artist who is hypnotized by Sanur’s allure is the lead singer for The
Rolling Stone, Mick Jagger. He tied the knot with his former wife Jerry Hall
in Sanur in a traditional Balinese wedding since he fell in love with the
people and the nature.

1. Massimo

By the time you have Italian meals at this classic place you will know why
this restaurant is considered one of top ten restaurants in Sanur. If you go a
little bit late for dinner at Massimo, you will be in their waiting list and
should wait a couple of minutes till one table is ready for you. But it is
worth it. Massimo offers authentic Italian selections in which some of the
ingredients are imported. And their ice cream makes people scream for the
yummy taste.

2. Kayumanis Cafe

An intimate place to eat serves you with international selection which menu is
different from other eateries. The top quality chefs always present their own
special recipes that you would not have the ordinary menu here. Situated on
Jl. Tandakan, Sanur, it is only IDR 300.000 for two persons including drinks.

3. Bistro Amsterdam

At the entrance of Hardy’s Supermarket on the left side you will find a casual
eatery. This open-air Bistro Amsterdam provides you with Amsterdam dishes. It
is so glad to find Kapsalon here with pork shoarma, shoarma sauce, and salad.
You can enjoy the Kapsalon while watching video clips on two hanging big flat
TVs. Oh don’t forget to read the funny running text. It is always good to read
jokes while enjoying Kapsalon.

4. Char Ming

Char Ming is really charming with its wonderful décor and for sure the superb
foods. Your dedicated chefs will provide you with large choice of new recipes
of international dishes something like garlic prawn or onion soup. The natural
setting combining Javanese and Balinese architecture is blended very well with
the plants. It is a nice place to hold small party or entertaining clients.
They also have various options of wine.

5. Ristorante Sale E Pepe

Italian for Salt and Pepper, Ristorante Sale e Pepe gives you an opportunity
to travel to Italian through the authentic home-made Italian foods. Gelato ice
cream will be a perfect dessert to end your dinner in this wonderful eatery.

6. Ratatouille

It is not owned by the smart rat but the foods are amazing. Although
ratatoiulle is so Italy but this wonderful eatery has good selection of
Indonesian cuisines and the ribs are brilliant. Kids are looked after very
well since Ratatouille offers kids’ menu.

7. Cat & Fiddle

This is an Irish style pub in Bali and the menu is so British. Shepherd’s pie,
Fisherman’s Pie and other English menu will be served on your table in
Balinese outdoor setting. Tucked away on Jl. Cemara, Sanur, this resto will
complete your dining with live band performance.

8. Ronald’s Café and Resto

Need a place to eat with internet connection? Come to Ronald’s Café and Resto.
But the thing which make you should not miss this place is Ronald himself. He
is really helpful when you discuss about where you would go in Bali. Apart
from this man, the resto has good Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and state-the-art
of internet connection.

9. Mona Lisa Café

Located across Griya Santrian, Mona Lisa café has excellent service, excellent
food, and for sure excellent price. This little place to eat is just amazing
for you having meal since their Indonesian food (satay, spring roll,etc) are
superb.
10. Bonsai Café

Have nice foods at inexpensive price by the ocean at Bonsai Café. It is a
popular place to eat so that Bonsai Café is always busy to serve starving
people.
